Write a RSum Answer - Why I Did it and How You Can Do it Too
Write a RSum Answer - Why I Did it and How You Can Do it TooDuring my senior year of college, I took an English composition class with one of the teachers, J. C. Faulkner. One of the things we did in class was to do an essay that we called portfolio activity writing a resume answer. It was a fairly standard class assignment, and I found it difficult to remember what I had written on the first few times through the activity. What follows is a true story about this activity, and how I worked through it.In a bit of a sad coincidence, Michael Jackson was a student in our class. Michael would often hang out in the first-floor student lounge. He'd be in there watching TV or drinking a soda with a few friends. One day, I saw his door closed, and I could hear him talking with someone. He turned off the TV and walked into his study. A few minutes later, I noticed him hunched over a tiny desk, holding a piece of paper up with his finger and thumb and typing away in one hand while holding the pe n in the other. While I was sitting there, I sat down on his desk and pointed to the notebook where he'd been writing his story. He handed it to me, and I read his writing. Here's what he wrote:'I used to be kind of a shy kid, but as I grew older I began to find that I had a great talent for songwriting. After getting my first band together, we took our first auditions. When I got a few rejections from these bands, my self-esteem plummeted, and I quit being a musician.'This 'story' goes on to describe the experience he had at that moment in his life, and his decision to leave Hollywood, go back to his apartment and play his favorite song on his guitar. He described this experience as if it were his own story. He wrote of the music that was coming out of his ears. He talked about listening to it in his dreams.J. C. Faulkner asked a couple of questions about the story. First, he wanted to know how many times the story had been told. He asked for the number of times it had been told to his class. Finally, he asked if he had any insights about why the story was telling itself. He did.
